Products made of real genuine leather have a natural, rich and elegant finish. Anyway, nowadays synthetic materials also known as "fake leathers", tend to be everywhere at cheaper prices and have an almost identical look as natural leather.
Whether you're in the market for a new backpack or a new sofa, you should be able to spot the differences between fake and real leather. Here you have 3 tips on how to do it correctly. And remember practice makes the master!
1. Do a touch test
You can tell the difference between fake and real leather by touching the piece. Fake leather feels smooth, cold, almost like plastic. Real leather doesn't feel perfectly smooth. It will have a grainy feel.
2. Smell it
Another way to identify fake leather is to do a smell test. Leather has a distinct, oaky smell. While fake leather smells like plastic. If you can smell a chemical odor, you can bet it is fake leather!
3. Look up close
Look at the surface of the product. Real leather doesn't have a perfect uniform surface, it could have imperfections and pores. If you don't see any imperfection on the surface, you may have spotted fake leather!
